Syrian-American and with a voice gorgeous enough for radio, Káryyn entered 2019 running at full speed, with her full-length debut The Quanta Series earning rave reviews. The album is a meditation on memory, loss, and connections. Káryyn was compelled to write it after losing relatives in Aleppo in 2011. Her productions evoke the sounds of contemporary electronic music, but morph and shift to evoke the grief her music is channelling. Through it all, the music is held together by a core of great songwriting and Káryyn’s exceptional singing. You can listen to the album here.

Yoshino composes and arranges pop-influenced originals, interspersed with her own arrangements of jazz standards. A classically trained pianist, her arrangements move in ecstatic fits and starts, holding the room with brief moments of tension before bursting into glorious runs on piano, bass, and saxophone.

Let’s try a different strategy. I said you should tune the B string a major third above G, but you could just as easily tune the B string a fifth plus an octave above the low E string. So let’s go ahead and multiply 1 Hz by 3/2, and then double it, which gives you a B at 3 Hz. Now the B string sounds terrific against the low E at 1 Hz and the high E at 4 Hz.
